About Us
Austin Urogynecology was founded by Dr. George Shashoua in March, 2010. Dr. Shashoua specializes in treating urogynecological conditions including urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, bowel incontinence, and bladder pain syndrome. Prior to opening Austin Urogynecology, Dr. Shashoua practiced at Oakwood Women's Centre in Round Rock, Texas.
During the past 15 years, Dr. Shashoua has been on the forefront of advancements in the medical and surgical treatment of prolapse and incontinence in women. In 2007, he began incorporating the da Vinci robot into his surgical practice and has obtained expertise in the da Vinci sacrocolpopexy procedure which is improving the minimally-invasive mesh-augmented surgical treatment of prolapse. Advancements inthe use of permanent mesh in combination with the selective use of the da Vinci robot has improved success rates of prolapse and incontinence procedures from a less than 50 success rate to more than a 90 percent success rate.
The Vision of this practice is to treat each patient's needs in an individualized way utilizing all the advances available. The practice offers high success rates in the treatment of both pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, employing the skills Dr. Shashoua has acquired during the development of now standard-of-care treatment.
Dr. Shashoua teams with Dr. Koushik Shaw whose Austin Urology Institute offers comprehensive male and female urologic care. Nurse Practitioner Sarah Stiriss works with Dr. Shashoua to round out the team. The team will be moving to a new office currently under construction around the corner from the existing office in the spring of 2012.
Dr. Shashoua is also a member of the Fibroid Treatment Collaboration. The Fibroid Treatment Collaboration is dedicated to the comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to the management of uterine fibroids or myomas and endometriosis. If surgery such as myomectomy or hysterectomy is needed, it is done minimally invasively with the laparoscope or with the da Vinci robot.
Dr. Shashoua earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Texas. He attended Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and completed his residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center at Jacksonville. He served on the teaching faculty at Brackenridge Hospital. Dr. Shashoua is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Shashoua lives in Austin, is married to Marilyn Shashoua and has two teenage children.
